Sunday, October 13, 2002little kids are just mean
saturday afternoon was myra's bridal shower and i spent the majority of the time looking after my goddaughter. she's two and 1/4 years old and has quite a vocabulary for someone so young. i showed her the view overlooking edgewater and she was fascinated by the boats. she would tug at me and say, "ninang, the boats! the boats!" and i would carry her to the window because she was too short to see it herself.
the whole time we were there, she was so sweet -- kissing me and telling me she loved me. it was too adorable.
afterwards, joyce and i decided to go to old navy in edgewater to shop for brianna's fall clothes. joyce had warned me previously that she could not shop with her daughter. its only now that i understand why.
as soon as we got into the store, brianna wanted to do her own thing. she was looking at clothes she liked. at one point, joyce had left for another section of the store and i tried to lift brianna up to take her but she wouldnt go.
"NO," she replied, as she continued to play with the tags on the leopard-printed fleece coats (yuk). I said, as nicely as i could, "come on, nana, your mom left. you have to come with me."
and then she goes, "i dont even like you."
oh no she didnt. not this girl, who i had given a whole afternoon's worth of attention to. not the girl who claimed she loved her ninang.
and then, in a desperate attempt to reclaim some sort of dignity (although i think it had the opposite affect) i asked, "but nana, i showed you the boats. and the fishies in the water."
and she replies back, nonchalantly, "so? i dont care. sorry." the inflections in her voice and just the way she said the word sorry made me think she maliciously intended to hurt me and by saying those words, she knew she could.
she's freaking two years old.
unbelievable.
