and the hits just keep on coming

my manager had a birthday the other week and my coworkers decided to do something special for her birthday.

it was a great effort by 8 people, 3 air pumps, 500 some odd balloons, a couple of balloon casualties and 2 some odd hours. four of us came in hours earlier to start the process.

shortly afterward, another coworker made the mistake of going on vacation.

what's the easiest way to get rid of 500+ birthday balloons? you put them in someone else's cube. we put in a little more effort since we were recycling our previous prank.

cruel and unusual punishment

last weekend, while at james' parents' house, i stumbled upon a daddy-long-legs in the bathroom. i'm not a friend of the insect world...especially insects as bizarre looking as daddy-long-legs.

seriously...look at it. its quite disturbing. anyhow, i knew i couldnt use the bathroom knowing that thing was free to move about so i decided then and there that i would kill it. have you seen one of those suckers in action? they are really fast -- so i had to slow it down before i could kill it. i took the lysol sitting by the toilet and sprayed directly at it. i think i stunned it because it looked a little dazed before it scurried behind the toilet. i couldnt have it sitting in the back of the toilet when i was going to sit on the toilet so i waited for it to move back into view at which point i sprayed like there was no tomorrow. it eventually slowed down to the point where i could trap it under the garbage can. as i was washing my hands, i realized that the poor thing would probably die a horrible death, trapped under a can, blinded and burning of disinfecting cleaner.

so i did the only decent thing i could. i made james lift up the garbage can so that it could escape. although at that point, i think the thing had either died or was so terrified of being maced with lysol again that it would rather live out the rest of its sad existence entombed under a garbage can. james refused to completely turn it over to see what the thing was doing. he tilted the can up for an opening and tapped on it. but nothing came out.

i'm sorry gross little bug.

get out of town

i was on the phone with my roommate who asked me a very important question: can you name the five oceans of the world? "sure," i replied, "atlantic, pacific, indian, arctic and..."

crickets. dead silence.

it is unfathomable that i would forget something as easy as naming the 5 oceans. this prompted me to do a search on google to find the answer.

5 oceans
1. atlantic
2. pacific
3. indian
4. arctic
5. southern ?!?!? wtf is the southern ocean? and why don't i remember it?

there it is on the bottom, left hand corner of the world. i know i'm not crazy to not have the slightest recollection of the southern ocean, so i delve further into investigation, and lo and
behold, this is what i find: For many years only (4) four oceans were officially recognized, and then in the spring of 2000, the International Hydrographic Organization established the Southern Ocean, and determined its limits. (according to worldatlas.com)

are bles and i the only dorks that didn't know this? better yet, was this information divulged to the public in 2000, because i don't recall this momentous decision being reported in any newspapers or broadcasts. on may 27, 2006, the news overly informed the public of the birth of brad and angelina's baby, but i don't remember that same fervor for announcing a new ocean. where are our priorities? or is it because i am no longer in grammar school? does a 5th grader know more than i do now-a-days? i wouldn't be surprised.

which is why i am re-teaching myself basic math skills. i picked up a book at the bookstore a couple of weeks ago and i'm currently up to percentages. i passed addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals. you'd be surpised how much basic information you can forget when you don't use it. my manager lent me a basic math tutorial dvd that's supposed to be really good. i'm looking forward to it.

extended weekend update

i was advised by my manager to take monday off (no, our company didn't think it necessary to give us monday off), so i have a comfy four days to do with it what i please. james and i vegged out on friday...actually it was more like a$sed out, because we both fell asleep at 11 something watching nightmare on elm st. on the amc channel. i was still in my running clothes (gross, i know...i went straight for the computer after my run and started watching tv and then zonked out shortly thereafter).

so saturday i had an agenda. james and i headed over to south st. seaport (via public transportation). we hopped on one of those one-hour cruises that go around the ny harbor and the statue of liberty. it was our tribute to independence day. i didn't get alot of photo opps during the company cruise, so i decided to take full advantage of this one.

afterwards we found L+L (a hawaiian bbq chain restaurant that james frequents whenever he visits the bay area). i wasnt too impressed with my order, but james' was better.

later that night, james, ry, ling and i went to the leonia carnival...one fun house adventure and an octopus ride later, we were sick to our stomachs and ready to hurl. i love carnivals...the greasy food, the crappy prizes, the guady lights...all of it just makes me smile inside. we are supposed to go to the meadowlands fair tonight, but scatterend thunderstorms and a chance of hail is preventing us from doing so. instead we are going to veg out a little more and probably catch a movie if we arent too lazy. tomorrow and tuesday is for swimming and more swimming. hopefully the weather will be more cooperative.

happy 4th of july!
