i was on the phone with my roommate who asked me a very important question: can you name the five oceans of the world? "sure," i replied, "atlantic, pacific, indian, arctic and..."
crickets. dead silence.
it is unfathomable that i would forget something as easy as naming the 5 oceans. this prompted me to do a search on google to find the answer.
5 oceans 1. atlantic 2. pacific 3. indian 4. arctic 5. southern ?!?!? wtf is the southern ocean? and why don't i remember it?
there it is on the bottom, left hand corner of the world. i know i'm not crazy to not have the slightest recollection of the southern ocean, so i delve further into investigation, and lo and
behold, this is what i find: For many years only (4) four oceans were officially recognized, and then in the spring of 2000, the International Hydrographic Organization established the Southern Ocean, and determined its limits. (according to worldatlas.com)
are bles and i the only dorks that didn't know this? better yet, was this information divulged to the public in 2000, because i don't recall this momentous decision being reported in any newspapers or broadcasts. on may 27, 2006, the news overly informed the public of the birth of brad and angelina's baby, but i don't remember that same fervor for announcing a new ocean. where are our priorities? or is it because i am no longer in grammar school? does a 5th grader know more than i do now-a-days? i wouldn't be surprised.
which is why i am re-teaching myself basic math skills. i picked up a book at the bookstore a couple of weeks ago and i'm currently up to percentages. i passed addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals. you'd be surpised how much basic information you can forget when you don't use it. my manager lent me a basic math tutorial dvd that's supposed to be really good. i'm looking forward to it. 1:32 AM
